The depth of the Clos des Goisses 2016

A wine shaped by time

The depth of the Clos des Goisses 2016 - Champagne Philipponnat

The 2016 vintage of our Clos des Goisses cuvée illustrates the strength of a unique terroir, marked by its spectacular slope and south-facing aspect, which shape a wine of character every year.

2016 got off to a mixed start, with a mild winter, spring frost and exceptional rainfall, before the summer brought sufficient heat and light. Thanks to regular ripening and bunches of remarkable quality, the harvest produced fruit of exemplary purity.

The 2016 blend is 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay. Vinification entirely in wood, without malolactic fermentation, preserves the natural freshness of the vintage and brings out the controlled strength of the terroir. After eight years of ageing in the historic cellars of Mareuil-sur-Ay, the wine reveals a deep golden colour and a delicate bouquet combining elderflower, white fruits and a pastry note. With aeration, the wine gains complexity, with hints of salted caramel, vanilla and ginger.

On the palate, the attack is full and creamy. The aromas develop towards ripe yellow fruits, evolving into a more pronounced pear character. The saline and spicy finish is characterised by high precision and remarkable persistence. A great wine as well as a great Champagne, Clos des Goisses 2016 pairs magnificently with iodine-rich fish, lobster or, after a few more years, soft cheeses. It benefits from being decanted to reveal its full brilliance.

Already at full maturity, it promises a noble evolution over many decades.
